In November of 2014, Erie County (New York) fell victim to a significant lake effect snow event that dumped more than 7-feet of snow in some areas south of Buffalo. Emergency services were soon overwhelmed and both the County Executive Poloncarz and Governor Cuomo issued States of Emergency for the affected areas.
The Epicenter Deployment Support Unit (EDSU) deployed a single resource Media Specialist & Assistant Public Information Officer to support the New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services’ (NYS DHSES) Type 2 All-Hazards Incident Management Team’s response to Winter Storm “Knife” within Erie County.
During this deployment, the EDSU Media Specialist monitored both social and traditional media, supported photography and videography related to the incident, assisted with strategic messaging, and enhanced the overall disaster response operation with timely and effective management of a Joint Information System.
As a result of the extreme damage created by both snowfall and subsequent flooding, this incident resulted in a major disaster declaration (FEMA-4204-DR) that impacted nine counties across Western New York.
