The New York State Health Emergency Preparedness Coalition is a New York State Department of Health Office of Health Emergency Preparedness program that supports planning, outreach, training, and infrastructure development to respond to chemical- and bio-terrorism, infectious disease outbreaks, and other health threats/emergencies.
Epicenter Media & Training has been supporting the West Region Health Emergency Preparedness Coalition and the Finger Lakes Regional Training Center (through the University of Rochester Medical Center) for a number of years.
Epicenter provides training, exercises and consultative support for a variety of program relating to disaster triage, basic and advanced disaster life support, healthcare emergency management, decontamination and hazardous materials response.
In addition to training delivery within New York State, a key facet of Epicenter Media & Training’s support of the Coalition was realized in 2016 through participation on the “Western Region Emergency Communications, Knowledge & Information Tests” Exercise Design Team. Master Exercise Practitioner and CEO, Christopher Tarantino, supported this exercise (along with others on the Epicenter training/exercise team) by providing technology support; exercise design, control and evaluation during the week-long exercise; educational marketing services; and other consultative guidance with partners from more than 500 participating agencies across the western region of New York State.
For the first time, WRECKIT 2016 included a social media component that had never before been tested in New York State. Epicenter Media & Training developed the social media and crowdsourced citizen participation portions of the overall exercise, developed educational materials to encourage participating agencies and outside stakeholders to engage, and utilized Epicenter Deployment Support Unit (EDSU) media monitoring technologies and expertise to develop crowd-maps and other information products to simulate social media intelligence gathering during the exercise.
